Design from the Athlete's Perspective
Mark Tieszen will be speaking about his 7 years as a professional skier in the Telemark industry. The discussion will focus on his journey from athlete to designer and the the manner in which athletes effect designs as they are released to the public. The main product that will be discussed will be the design of the NTN Telemark boot and binding and the struggles of releasing a new concept to an age old tradition of skiing.
As a professional athlete Mark has developed a deep interest in the design and performance of equipment, a passion that led him to work directly with manufacturers to improve their products and eventually took him back to school to hone the skills necessary for a career in design.
Sports have shaped his course from the beginning: from his time as a youth, riding motocross, to bull riding and team roping in junior high, to rugby and boxing in college, his participation in sports ingrained in me a dedication to learning, training and team. Seven years as a professional skier pushed him to understand the critical importance of fine-tuning performance, not only through training but by examining and improving the relationship between athlete and equipment.
