Mead is the newest old thing! Most likely the first fermented beverage on the planet, alcohol from honey has been made by essentially every civilization on earth, during all epochs of time, dating back at least 8,500 years and likely much earlier. There is strong evidence that Mead was enjoyed by our Paleolithic ancestors. In the last ten years, the number of licensed meaderies in the U.S. has exploded from about 30 to well over 200, with meads ranging from 5.8% alcohol to 21.8% alcohol; dry to sweet; sparkling to still; and flavors including fruits, spices, flowers, and chili pepper! There is a Mead for every food pairing, and a Mead for every occasion. Whether your favorite regular poison is wine, beer, cider, or sake, there is a Mead for you! Curious? Come: learn and taste the lore and magic of Mead!
Chrissie Manion Zaerpoor has been making mead since 1997. After thirteen years as an engineer and engineering manager at Intel Corp., she co-founded Kookoolan Farms in 2005, renowned locally for its 100% grassfed beef and lamb, and pasture-raised poultry, lamb, and pork. Kookoolan World Meadery was licensed in 2009 and features unique cold-process, raw honey meads. The tasting room at Kookoolan World Meadery features over 115 meads of every conceivable style from all over the country and all over the world.
